My biggest obstacle in making this project a reality was going to be how to physically get the backpacks to the 100 students that live right on the Amazon River in Peru and attend a local school. I decided to reach out to the travel company, Aqua Expeditions, that introduced me to these amazing communities and people that live in the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Through research, I found the CEO, Mr. Zugaro, and emailed him explaining how my cruise along the Amazon with his company inspired me to get school supplies for the children I met. I didn’t think he would respond. Within a few hours, he wrote me back!
Thanks to Mr. Zugaro, I am currently working with people, who work for Aqua Expeditions, in Peru. We have agreed on the backpacks and the items that will be in each one. I have reviewed the costs of the items, and have discussed which items are of greatest need.
Not only did Mr. Zugaro connect me with people that could help me, he offered to purchase the school supplies in Peru, so that I could avoid pick-up and delivery fees, shipping fees, importation duties, and tariffs-related to getting items through customs. He also offered to deliver the backpacks to the three schools, directly to the students free of charge.
